Postscript

When I picked M up at school today, the first thing she told me was that her teacher had already collected the Junior Great Books books and returned them to...wherever she returns them, so there hadn't even been a reading assignment and, most importantly, she hadn't lost the book. "All that crying for nothing," she said, quite cheerfully. And she felt fine all day.
