Gaza Post

I am trying to write a post about Gaza, and it is becoming a boring historical disquisition which I don't want to write.

What I have to say, I think, is this: I love Israel, passionately. I love my family in Israel. I love the golden stones of Jerusalem. I love Wadi Kelt and the beach in Tel Aviv, and did I mention that I love my family?

And yet--and this is the first time I have ever written this down, though I said it to my sister on the phone the other night, and I am terrified to write it down, because I believe that you should only write things you are fine with everyone reading, and I know that if my aunt read this it would break her heart, and if my cousin read this he would be furious, but still, it is the truth, and this is a moment in which the truth seems imperative, so here it is.

If killing Palestinian children and destroying Gaza is Israel, I am willing to give up Israel.

My worry (and I have a lot of them these days about Israel) is that this isn't Israel at all, but the actions of a few people in power that will ultimately wreak great harm with unintended consequences....nothing scintillating or brilliant, just worried....:(

I am so glad it's not just me. I converted to Judaism last year, and I keep getting emails about pro-Israel demonstrations and how biased the media is being by not reporting the carnage in 100 percent Team Israel terms. I love Israel, I believe in Israel, but this is awful. I can hardly comprehend it. I feel guilty by association, and it makes me sick.

I know it's naive, but I listened to an announcement earlier that there was a pro-Israel rally at the JCAA in my town, and a pro-Palestine rally at another location, and I thought, where's the pro-peace rally? Why do we have to be for one or the other? Neither side is completely innocent, and neither is completely villainous - shouldn't rational adults be able to reach accord?

This issue is heavy on my heart since the day it started, and I've avoided beloved relatives because I KNEW we'd get into it. Thanks so much for posting this; you are far from alone.

My heart has always been with the Palestinians. But, I nevertheless believe that the Israeli people are better than this. The campaign in Gaza is an aberration for them, as our own (American) recent forays into the dark side.

We are now on the road back into the light, and I am not loosing hope for the Israeli people as well. Condemning what's happening now doesn't mean we need to condemn Israel itself. I never thought to condemn America even while hating what we were doing.
